Giving in 2003

In 2003 individuals gave $179.4 Billion to charities. That is only up 0.2% from 2002, after inflation.

$1,620 is the average annual amount that contributig households give to charities; which represents about 3% of their income.

$1800 VS. $1,310 is the amount contributed by househols that itemize versus households that take the standard deduction. Tax deductions do play a parts in giving.

  1. .2% isn’t much. Is that an official economic indicator?

  2. .2% is the amount that 2003 exceeded 2002 adjusted for inflation. If inflation was 3%, then 2003 exceeded 2002 by 3.2%. Still not much.
