IM / SNS/ and Corporate Intranets

A short bit on this website illuminates the fact that Dave Pollard is giving a two week long dialogue on the value of the corporate intranet when there is so much free software to facilitate connectivity.

There must be something about the corporate intranet that so advanced above any of the free and common systems to perpetuate it. Can all of those CIOs be wrong and wasteful? I am intrigued to find out if it is more of ego that keeps CIOs beating the proprietary system drum over freeware and shareware. I hear and understand the objection to installing Instant Messenger software on all computers (outside contacts waste time), but also can facilitate a heck of a lot of collaboration. As with life it is a trade off.
