Health Reminder Assistant
The Health Reminder Assistant is close to pilot launch. The big question in my mind is, “will people play” will they go online and use the service? From a technology standpoint, the system rocks. An extremely complex back end using IVR, PHP, XML, and encrypted with 64 bit encryption. But really its the front end that brings folks back. So the next big challenge will be to design an innovative hook to keep folks coming back.
Here are some of the latest cool things we are adding:
1. System Tray tool: A desktop icon you can add that will alert you to a pending reminder
2. Algorithm: Automatically determines what reminders you need and gives you educational information on each reminder
3. HTML Email: Increases the aesthetics of the reminders

Since it’s day one of a new year, I’m going use the occasion to explore some ideas about the future (otherwise known as Wild A** Guesses, WAGs). What attracts my attention is big general trends that have effects in the long run but of which there may be only quick glimpses on any given day. There’s a lot of noise in daily events from things that seem sort of important, but a lot of stuff seldom has more than transient impact on how lives change over time. So there’s three things I’d like to focus on that I think have great impact: globalism, information flow, and the intricacies of knowing cancer.
Pattie's winter squash soup
Why have I posted Pattie Jackson-Bolduc’s delicious winter squash soup recipe? Because it’s so yummy, and it’s perfect for this time of year. I thank Pattie for the recipe. You will too.
The Futuring and Innovation Center is Fighting Obesity One Good Idea at a Time
Can we fight obesity one good idea at a time? We think you might have the answer to this and other problems that increase cancer risk.
The Society’s Futuring and Innovation Center (FIC) would like to hear your ideas about how our organization might be able to address a major health problem and risk factor for cancer — poor nutrition and lack of physical activity. Remember, the Springboard program — an internal “idea market” that encourages staff at all levels to submit their fresh ideas for breakthrough services, improvements in business processes, and new technologies — is ready to receive your thoughts on fighting obesity, encouraging physical activity, or any other topic that might help us make even more progress toward achieving our mission.
The first FIC-funded innovation spawned by Adam Pelligrini of the Northwest Division — the Health Reminder Assistant — is almost ready for external testing. The Health Reminder Assistant, which allows users to receive helpful reminders about important dates and checkups via e-mail, is currently being tested internally by staff from the Northwest and Hi-Tex Divisions. The FIC is also pleased to announce funding for CA Tools, a project of David Neff from the Hi-Tex Division. Capitalizing on research showing that physicians rely heavily on the Internet for up-to-date medical information, CA Tools will allow physicians to download the latest from www.cancer.org onto their Palm PDAs. CA Tools will replace bulky laminated pocket guidelines about cancer screenings, among other things.
