SXSW Panel : Adapt or Die The Future of Volunteers

Exactly one week from today Randal and I will speaking at SXSW on "The Future of Volunteers".  Our panel will feature a frank and honest look at what non-profits need to do to recruit the next generation of volunteers. You know all those ladies and gents that are your Board of Directors right now? Well they won’t be around forever. In fact do you have anyone under 40 on your board? And more importantly is that even what volunteers want to do any more? These are the types of question we will be discussing. We are lucky enough to also have Patty Goldman from March of Dimes, Ford Cochran from National Geographic and Fayandria from Second Life speaking as well.

Grab a free pass here if you want and let us know you are coming!

Second Life Community Convention 2006

I  am here at San Francisco.  Last
night there were a ton of live entertainers from SL up on the convention center
stage.  Frogg Marlowe and others brought their guitars and keyboards to
play live for the audience.  It was very cool to meet numerous SL
Residents face to face and have the very real and sincere handshakes and conversations.

The event is in full swing and right now Mitch Kapor (developer of Lotus 123)
is onstage giving a brief history of his involvement with Second Life.  As
a n investor and visionary Mitch helped mentor Philip and help him drive the
business strategy – a frugal strategy that made the company lean and efficient.
Skepticism is part of starting disruptive technology, and the ability the move
past that is a key for success.  SL
started at a critical point when the nexus of the appropriate technology, and
social ideals converged.

Mitch is now talking about the Second Life RFL and how we
are going to take and create an office in world. I am so excited to give a very
brief presentation about the Society’s efforts in SL.  Mitch is excited about a place and world that
is inclusive and provides new opportunities for those who are marginalized in
the material world. As posted in Community Mobilization.

Metaverse Roadmap summit

Saturday was day two of the Metaverse Roadmap summit and the
brains were churning.  The invitee list is chock-full of A-listers in a
number of different circles.  There are academics like Ted Castranova,
social activists like Ethan Zuckerman and Esther Dyson, game designers like
Randy Farmer and a host of others.

We are collectively engaged in a two day futuring activity in environmentally
scanning and scenario building based on the next 10 years of Metaverse
evolution.  The roadmap is going to be a document that we hope sets some
future predictions and gives very broad guestemations of what the Metaverse
could do and fulfill in the near and far future.

By enhancing the quality of personal interactivity and making the interactions
more realistic, the Metaverse my have long lasting social trend
implications.  We are talking with game designers and sociologists and
trying to predict these trends.  The intellectual activity is startling
and the discussions are really world class.

The Other Side of SXSW

Sarah G. has done a fantastic job covering the events of SXSW during the day.  I have placed a number of posts on my blog Community Mobilization as well.  But there is more to SXSW than all of the amazing presenters and panels.  There is an extreme social and networking circuit.  After the events the real networking begins.  There were a dozen networking parties hosted by Yahoo!, Flickr, Blogger, the EFF, and a host of other Web 2.0 vendors and service providers.  I actually found these parties invaluable meeting amazing folks from Good Storm, Net Squared, Choose To Laugh and others.  SXSW is one o of the most social of these kinds of conference and that is one of the reasons that folks find it so valuable.
