The nonprofit sector in Southern California, made up of 13,370 tax-exempt
groups, reported total revenues of $38 billion and assets of $62 billion in
2000, a new report says.
Three in 10 of those revenue dollars, or about $11.2 billion came from
contributions, gifts and grants, while about six in 10 dollars, or $22.6 billion
came from program services revenue.
Health care groups and universities contributed the majority of the sector’s
revenue, with 133 hospitals and 66 schools reporting a combined $15 billion, the
report says, or about four in 10 dollars of the entire sector’s revenue.
